Valadon was not undervaluing women artists, she disliked that women artists of her time were expected to producing unchallenging, nonconfrontational, ‘pleasing’ art, aka “women’s art”.
Please refer to “Women’s Art”: The Myth in Our Western Social Construction” by Georgina Brainard. You must have skipped class the day that was being taught.
And to assume that they were unsupportive of each other simply because they didn’t work together is ludicrous. No one would expect the same of men working in different styles and genres. These were strong independent women working in a field dominated by men, so they chose to follow the painting styles they preferred, and that required studying under men.
The crack about ‘an old woman’ at the end was also very unnecessary.
